Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
